De TF42-B thermische overbelastingsrelais zijn economische elektromechanische beveiligingsapparaten voor het hoofdschakelcircuit. Ze voldoen aan de nieuwste normen voor rollend spoorwegmaterieel en maken plaatsing in passagiers- of bestuurderscabines mogelijk voor treinen die frequent in tunnels of ondergronds rijden. Ze bieden betrouwbare bescherming van motoren bij overbelasting of fase-uitval. De apparaten hebben uitschakelklasse 10. De thermische overbelastingsrelais zijn driepolige relais met bimetaal-uitschakelelementen. De motorstroom loopt door de bimetaal-uitschakelelementen en verwarmt deze direct en indirect. Bij overbelasting (overstroom) buigen de bimetalen door de opwarming.
